Rainbow Pillar, Serviceberry
(Amelanchier canadensis) Rainbow Pillar Serviceberry is a large flowering native deciduous shrub with a dense upright habit. Can be trained as a tree or even used as a hedge. Also ideal for use where a vertical accent plant is called for. The oval leaves turn brilliant shades of yellow to orange and red in fall. Clusters of snowy white flowers bloom in spring before the foliage emerges and give way to small purplish-black fruit often used in jams and jellies. Not a heavy producer and is primarily grown for ornamental purposes, but can produce better if planted near other varieties of serviceberry. Grows best in average well-drained soils, but can tolerate clay and even standing water for short periods of time. Rainbow Pillar has improved resistance to powdery mildew. Matures at 15 feet tall and about 6 feet wide if left un-trimmed. Hardy to USDA zone 4
